In the right hands\, artifacts of material culture related to the Derby have the power to inspire nuanced stories of the past and shed light on marginalized voices in the industry’s history.\n\nIn The History of the Kentucky Derby in 75 Objects\, Jessica K. Whitehead sets out to recover this accurate history of America’s longest continuously held sporting event and establish a balance between well-known narratives and those that are less widely shared. Whitehead gives readers a personal tour of this history through 75 historic objects from the museum’s permanent collection. Her selections place Black\, Latin American\, and female riders\, owners\, and trainers closer to the center of the Derby story\, spotlighting the contributions and achievements of groups that have played a vital role in shaping the legacy of the Run for the Roses.\n\nJessica K. Whitehead is the senior curator of collections for the Kentucky Derby Museum\, where she safeguards and interprets the permanent collection of 20\,000+ objects\, photographs\, and archival materials. On behalf of the museum\, Whitehead has recently published The History of the Kentucky Derby in 75 Objects through the University Press of Kentucky.\nOutside of the Derby Museum\, she is the preeminent scholar on the artist\, writer\, and sustainability pioneer Harlan Hubbard\, and her biography of Hubbard will be released by UPK in February 2025. She is currently a board member of the Kentucky Museum & Heritage Alliance and served as a founding board member of the new nonprofit organization Payne Hollow on the Ohio.\n\nThe EquineEd event will take place in the Kentucky Horse Park Visitor Center on Saturday\, May 10th\, at 12:30 pm. As always\, the lectures are FREE and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The United States Pony Clubs\, Inc.\, develops character\, leadership\, confidence and a sense of community in youth\, and adults\, through a program that teaches the care of horses and ponies\, riding and mounted sports. The Midsouth Region\, which encompasses parts of Ilinois\, Indiana\, Ohio\, West Virginia\, and Alabama plus all of Kentucky and Tennessee\, has about 450 members who range in age from 5 to 80 years old. Hosting a “MegaRally” each summer at the Kentucky Horse Park in June\, Midsouth includes all riding levels for Eventing\, Dressage\, Show Jumping\, and Combined Test and ends the week with USEA-sanctioned horse trial offering competition levels from Intro through IP.

DESCRIPTION:Established in 2001\, the Adequan/USEF Junior Hunter National Championship showcases the best junior hunters in the nation while providing riders opportunities to meet and spend time with competitors from all over the country. In 2014\, the new 3’3” Junior Hunter section was added to the Championship and has quickly gained popularity.  Each year\, more than 2\,000 eligible hunters qualify to compete in the prestigious final which is held on each coast and is comprised of three phases: handy hunter\, classic\, and under saddle phase. The overall score from the weighted sections determines the ultimate winner.

SUMMARY:Lexington Junior League Charity Horse Show
DESCRIPTION:Created in 1937\, to help fund the Junior League’s community works project\, the horse show has grown to be the world’s largest outdoor American Saddlebred show and the first leg of the Saddlebred “Triple Crown”.  Today\, the show attracts approximately 1\,000 world recognized competitors from the U.S. and Canada\, has raised over four million dollars for charitable and civic organizations in Central Kentucky and generates over five million dollars in revenue for local merchants each summer.  The Lexington Junior League Charity Horse Show has truly made a tremendous impact in the Saddlebred industry as well as in the local community. Junior League is the UPHA Show of the Year Winner for 2018 and the UPHA Chapter 9 Show of the Year for 2022.
